Radiated Tortoise

In 1777, British explorer Captain Cook presented a baby Radiated tortoise (Astrochelys), to the Tongan royal family. Tu'i Malila remained in the care of the royal family until its death of old age in May 1965, at 188 years of age. Only one other captive vertebrate, a koi named Hanako, lived longer (226 years).

This coin was minted in 1975 and 1979 only.
