The original rabbit coin was replaced in 1988 with the same design in a different metal and a changed obverse.
The domestic rabbit is a substantial part of the world's meat supply, with the annual production estimated at 1.6 million tonnes (2014). However, most of this was in industrialized countries such as France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Hungary, and the United States. In some developing countries, rabbit meat production nearly doubled between 1966 (when this coin was issued) and 1980. Tanzania is among several African countries that have national rabbit-raising programs in place.
