São Tomé and Príncipe 20-CENTIMOS (KM-new)

São Tomé green pigeon

In 2017, São Tomé and Príncipe underwent monetary reform, introducing the "Second Dobra" and a new set of circulating coins that all feature birds.

The 20 centimos coin features a São Tomé green pigeon (Treron sanctithomae) an endangered bird endemic to the island of São Tomé. Its natural habitat is tropical and sub-tropical lowland forests. As this habitat has disappeared, so has the bird, with only about 10,000 individuals remaining (as of 2020). "Cessa" is a local name for the bird.

Thanks to Flavio S. for identifying this one for me!
