The walking Lion first appeared on the East African coinage in 1906 (when there were 100 cents to a rupee). In 1921, monetary reform saw the rupee replaced with the shilling. The lion appeared on the 50-cent and 1-shilling coins. They had nominal silver content until 1944, afterward being issued in copper-nickel.
