Wood Bison
In 2011, the Royal Canadian Mint announced the "Legendary Nature" quarter series. There are three designs, and each design has two versions: regular, and colourized. There were 6.25 million of each coin minted, and all were released into circulation in 2012.
The January design features the Wood Bison, North America's largest land mammal. Historical estimates suggest that there were once 168,000 Wood Bison in Canada. In 2001, Parks Canada and others began recovery measures to increase the current population of only 10,000 remaining animals.
