In 2001, Australia released a series of circulating commemorative 20 cent coins celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Federation of Australia. There were nine different coins, one for each of the six states and three territories of the country. The reverses were designed by students in a nation-wide competition.
The Queensland coin features a gecko. There are 60 recognized native species of gecko in Queensland, but genetic studies indicate that they are far more diverse than currently recognized.
Geckos do not have eyelids, so they use their tongues to lick their eyeballs clean.
The winning design for this coin is by Jenifer Gray of Ingham State High School.
