Papua New Guinea 2-TOEA (KM2)

Red Lionfish

The Red lionfish aka Butterfly cod aka Pterois volitans is found in reefs around Papua New Guinea, and can change its body colour to avoid detection. Growing up to 35 cm, it usually lies motionless on the bottom, waiting for smaller fish to approach. It spreads its large fins and uses them like a net to force the small fish into a position suitable for gobbling up.

The 2t coin was discontinued in 2006, and ceased to be legal tender on my birthday the following year.
