New Hebrides

Vanuatu (orthographic projection)These 80 small volcanic islands -- first inhabited around 4,000 years ago -- were taken over and called New Hebrides by France and Britain in the early 20th century.

The unique form of government saw both countries controlling the New Hebrides from 1906 to 1980, when the country achieved independence as Vanuatu.
