This is the first issue in the American Women Quarters Program and features Maya Angelou, an American poet, author, and civil rights activist (1928-2014).
Behind Maya's outstretched arms is the silhouette of a bird, in reference to her book I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. According to the coin's artist, this is a Purple martin, which is native to Angelou's home state of Arkansas.
