In 2010, the US Mint launched the "America the Beautiful" quarters program. Five quarters will be issued each year through 2020 (and one in 2021), for a total of 56 different designs. Each quarter will depict a national park or site from each of the 50 states, the federal district, and each territory).
Delaware's coin features Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge with a pair of Great Blue Herons. I have personally scrambled up a steep, wet river bank to arrive at a swamp 5 m above the river that was host to a heronry filled with screeching baby birds in large stick nests, waiting for the parent birds to bring them frogs for dinner. What an awesome ruckus!
Like humans, these birds can actually destroy their environment. Their poop may eventually kill off the swamp life they rely on for food, forcing them to abandon their home.
All coin images in Daniel's Coin Zoo are from my personal collection. I collect, research, and personally photograph every coin displayed on this site. PLEASE do not take my images without permission. If you would like to use any coin image you see, just ask me. Thank you.
