Solomon Islands 10-CENTS (KM235)

In Solomon Islands' mythology the Adaro are malevolent Mermen-like sea spirits believed to embody the wicked part of a dead man's spirit. Adaros are said to live in the sun and to travel back and forth to earth by sliding along rainbows. Adaros are dangerous to humans and kill by shooting people in the neck with poisonous flying fish. However, Adaros also visit men in their dreams to teach them new songs and dances. (from The Mythical Creatures Bible: The Definitive Guide to Legendary Beings by Brenda Rosen)

This coin features Ngorieru, the chief of the Adaro. The design originally appeared on a larger coin (KM4, KM27 with updated obverse portrait, and KM27a). This smaller version was first minted in 2012.
