Russia 10-RUBLES (Y891)

Winged Leopard

This coin is from 'The Russian Federation' series, a series of coins that started in 2005 with each celebrating a region of Russia.

This is the fifth issue, celebrating the Republic of Tatarstan. It shows the coat of arms of Tatarstan featuring a winged leopard.

From my Russian source, I am told the winged leopard is an ancient deity of fertility and protector of childhood. His tail is presented in the position of cordiality and friendliness. His raised right arm symbolized the best intentions and the bared teeth and claws indicate the ability to defend itself.
