Ghana 1-CEDI (KM25)

Cowry

Cowry (or Cowrie) are a number of different species of marine snail found in tropical waters. Their shells were used as money in parts of Africa. Images of them are found in cave paintings, and millions have been found in the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs.

The Ghanan denomination "cedi" is native Fanti for "shell" in recognition of the original form of currency.

This brass coin was minted in 1984 only, and replaced the original 7-sided 1 cedi coin that was minted in 1979.
