The Asiatic lion once lived from North Africa, to India, and into Europe. The Old Testament is full of lions, both figurative and literal, and King Solomon was apparently enamoured with them: His ivory throne featured fourteen gold lions. The lion is often used in the Old Testament as a metaphor for God, and Ezekiel used the lion as a parable for the nation of Israel.
This coin was issued in 1978 and 1979 only, or years 5738 and 5739 (since "creation").
