After two years of the "Cruzeiro real" Brazil switched to the "Real" in 1994, and as of 2016 it remains their unit of currency.
The obverse of this coin features Pedro I (1798-1834), both as a bust and in the background riding a horse. Dom Pedro was the founder and first ruler of the Empire of Brazil.
He was quite good with horses and trained unbroken horses on his father's farm. He was known as a fine horseman and excellent farrier (an expert in hoof care).
