Argentina 1-PESO (KM158)

Sea Lion

This coin -- issued in 2010 only -- celebrates the 200th anniversary of Argentina. On the obverse it mentions Mar del Plata, a city on the south-east coast in Buenos Aires known as the Pearl of the Atlantic.

The South American Sea Lion on the coin is actually a depiction of one of the sea lion sculptures created by José Fioravanti in 1940. The sculptures have become icons of Mar del Plata and are placed where sea lions used to congregate. Now they hang out on the Valdes Peninsula, further to the south.
