Lion of St. Mark

The Lion of St. Mark is a representation of the evangelist St. Mark (and is also the symbol of Venice). The winged beast is holding the book of St. Mark. The mythology says that a lion is one of four animals that hangs out around the throne of God -- because of course God likes cats -- but beyond that there is little agreement on the symbolism.
