The Academia Operosorum Labacensium was a scientific society and library founded in 1693 by 23 Slovenian scholars. The members adopted the Latin name "apes", meaning "bees", presumably because they were an industrious lot. Actually, their society name translates as Academy of the Industrious Residents of Ljubljana. The society was active until around 1800.
There are exactly 23 honey bees around the hive, one for each of the founding members.
