Russia 10-RUBLES (Y996)

Bird of Prey

This coin is from 'The Russian Federation' series, a series of coins that started in 2005 with each celebrating a region of Russia.

This issue is for the Komi Republic, an area west of the Ural Mountains covering more than 400,000 square kilometres. Apparently, 70% of Komi is covered in forests and 15% is swamps.

The bird figure on the coin -- and also the coat of arms -- reminds me of west coast native North American symbolism. In this case, the golden bird with half spread wings symbolizes the sun, power, and the upper world (heaven?). The woman's face in the centre is the Goddess of the Sun and World Mother granting life.
