The Barbary partridge is native to North Africa, the Canary Islands, and of course Gibraltar where it is the national bird.

Gibraltar's Barbary partridge first appeared on the one penny coin in 1988 (KM20) and this version (with a different obverse portrait) was minted from 1998 to 2003.
