The Barbary partridge is native to North Africa, the Canary Islands, and of course Gibraltar where it is the national bird.
Gibraltar's Barbary partridge appeared on the one penny coin from 1988 (KM20) until 2003 (KM773). After a short break, it returned in 2010, but without the branches beneath it (KM1098). This version has a slightly modified obverse.
