Originally named Reichsadler ("Imperial Eagle" or "National Eagle"), this heraldic eagle dates back to the Roman eagle standard used by Holy Roman Emperors. The name was changed to Bundesadler ("Federal Eagle") in 1945 with the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany.
This Bundesadler design was in use for over 50 years (1950-2001) on the 1 Deutsche Mark coin, but this 2 Deutsche Mark coin was minted in 1951 only.
