Austria 10-SCHILLING (KM2918)

Eagle

Normally, I try to avoid "heraldic" animals in the Coin Zoo, but I do make exceptions.

The Austrian Heraldic Eagle depicted on this coin showed up with the start of the Second Republic in 1945. It is the same as the First Republic eagle, with the addition of the broken chains on the eagle's legs. The chains symbolize Austria's liberation. The heraldic eagle between these two (1934-1938) featured two heads.

This coin was issued from 1974 until 2001, when Austria switched to the Euro. I believe the woman on the reverse depicts a regular Austrian in traditional headgear.
