Tamaraw

The Tamaraw (aka Mindoro dwarf buffalo) is a small bovine (aka 'cow') endemic to the island Mindoro in the Philippines. It is closely related to the water buffalo, but unlike it and other bovines the Tamaraw is a solitary animal (perhaps due to its evolution in a forest habitat). The scientific name Anoa mindorensis shown on this coin has been updated to Bubalus mindorensis, which means the animal was moved from the genus Anoa to Bubalus. Although not the official national animal, the Tamaraw is considered a national symbol.

This coin was issued from 1991 to 1994, replacing the larger coin that came before.
