Japan 500-YEN (Y149)

Crested Ibis

In 2008, Japan started the "47 Prefectures" coin program, which will be completed in 2016. The program includes silver collector coins, plus circulating bi-metallic coins.

The 2009 Niigata Prefecture coin features a pair of Japanese crested ibises (Nipponia nippon). The last wild Crested ibis in Japan died in 2003, and in 2008 captive bred birds from the last remaining wild population in China were reintroduced to the country.
