This circulating commemorative coin was issued in 1991 to promote tourism and features a stylized Indian Peafowl (males are called "peacocks"). Adopted as the national bird of India in 1963, the Indian Peafowl is indigenous to India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. It has been introduced all over the world, due to the male's spectacular colours and tail fan.
