This coin is from 'The Russian Federation' series celebrating the regions of Russia. This issue is for the Tambov Oblast and features three honey bees above a hive, which appears on the coat of arms and flag of the region.
The design first appeared in 1781 for the city of Tambov after being approved by Catherine the Great, with the bees representing the hard working citizens. The bees were originally in an arc, but now appear in a straight line. Tambov is known throughout Russia for its high-quality honey production.
Although I have not tasted it, I have it on good authority that the honey has a very special flavour due to the local motley grass meadows and linden tree forests.
This wonderful coin was a gift from Maria!
