Norway 10-ØRE (KM411)

Honey bee

Information on this coin is scarce. According to Hans-Otto Johnsen, a commercial beekeeper in Norway, Scandinavia is dominated by hobby beekeepers (Bee Culture - May 2005). As for the history of honey bees in Norway, there is no historical record before 1775, but archaeological evidence shows honey bees present in southern Norway around 1200 CE. The bee depicted here may be the European dark bee.

This coin was minted from 1959 to 1973, and is only one of a handful of circulating world coins that feature an insect, most of which are bees.
