Purple Heron
18 of the 61 worldwide species of herons (which includes egrets and bitterns) are found in Malawi. The tall slender wading bird found on this coin is the Purple Heron.
The Purple Heron originally appeared on the 5-tambala coin, which no longer circulates. This coin has 100 times the face-value. Probably an issue with inflation.
