The rooster is the symbol of the Malawi Congress Party and appeared on Malawi coins for the 30 years of their rule, starting in 1964 with the 6-pence coin. After the switch to decimal currency around 1971, the rooster switched from right-facing to left-facing.
This coin was issued in 1992 only.
