Gambia 8-SHILLINGS (KM7)

Hippopotamus

Hippopotamus amphibius is the only surviving member of its Genus, and one of only two surviving members of its Family, Hippopotimidae (the other is the pygmy hippopotamus which is not a member of the Genus Hippopotamus). They are the third-largest land mammal and are semi-aquatic vegetarians. Amazingly, hippos can sleep underwater, and rise up to breath every 3-5 minutes without waking up.

This huge copper-nickel coin was minted in 1970 only. Although only 25,000 pieces were made, it is still classified as a common circulating coin.
