The Greater Kudu is a woodland antelope found throughout eastern and southern Africa. Unfortunately, their magnificent horns make them the target of hunters both for trophies and for Jewish ritual horn-blowing during Rosh Hashanah.
Their declining population can also be attributed to habitat destruction and their habit of only running a short distance from hunters, then trying to hide, which does not work out too well for them.
This coin was minted in 1997 only. The 1991 date on the reverse refers to the year the "de facto" state was formed.
