In 2014, Burundi issued a commemorative set of coins featuring birds. The combined mintage of 1.8 million indicates they are intended for circulation.
The Shoebill (aka whalehead aka shoe-billed stork aka Balaeniceps rex) is a very large "stork-like" bird with a great big "shoe-like" bill. Seriously, take a look at that beak. They are found in fresh-water swamps of central tropical Africa.
All coin images in Daniel's Coin Zoo are from my personal collection. I collect, research, and personally photograph every coin displayed on this site. PLEASE do not take my images without permission. If you would like to use any coin image you see, just ask me. Thank you.
