The new Republic of Burundi began issuing coins in 1966. The original 1-franc coin (KM#18, 1970) was replaced by this slightly smaller version that features the country's coat of arms on the obverse. The lion's head has been stylized and is not quite as fierce as the original one depicted on the Kingdom's 1-franc coin.
Thanks to Marilynn for finding and donating this coin!
