Algeria 1-DINAR (KM129)

Prehistoric Buffalo

Behind the buffalo the coin shows Neolithic cave paintings (c. 8,000-4,000 BCE) found in the Tassili n'Ajjer mountain range. They depict a thriving scene of giant buffalo and other large African animals before the desert (and invading cultures) took over. The sandstone mountain range is characterized by spectacular natural arches.

The number 1 on the obverse also depicts a neolithic arrowhead.

This coin was minted from 1992 to 2010, but massive inflation means it no longer circulates.
