Zaire
The Republic of the Congo achieved independence (from Belgium) after violent riots in 1959. In 1971, the country's name was changed to Zaire. Following a civil war, the name was changed again to Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1997.
(Don't confuse any of this with the smaller country to the west called the Republic of the Congo.)
