The Republic of Uganda is a land-locked country in east Africa. A British Protectorate in the early 20th century, Uganda gained independence in 1962.
The infamous Idi Amin seized power in 1971, and during his 8 year military dictatorship an estimated 300,000 Ugandans lost their lives, and the country's economy was destroyed. Amin was deposed after Tanzania invaded in 1978, but Uganda's military problems continued.
With lots of natural resources -- including fertile soil, regular rain, mineral deposits, and oil and gas reserves -- Uganda has seen economic improvement in the 21st century. However, as of 2014 there are still some serious human rights concerns.
