Mozambique
The Republic of Mozambique started as a Portuguese colony in 1505 and achieved independence in 1975. Unfortunately, the country suffered through an intense civil war that lasted for fifteen years.
Despite serious problems -- high infant mortality and low life expectancy mainly due to malaria -- the people of Mozambique have largely retained their indigenous culture and the country has been improving economically while working hard on maintaining good relationships with its neighbours.
Mozambique is known for its wood sculpture, especially by the Makonde people, and for its traditions of dance.
