Liberia

Liberia (orthographic projection)Liberia -- meaning 'Land of the Free' -- was settled by the American Colonization Society in 1820.

The society transported free black Americans there in an effort to remove them from the United States. The settlers considered Liberia the promised land and referred to themselves as American. Unfortunately, they attempted to dominate those they viewed as inferior, which included everybody who already lived there.

Two civil wars (1989-1996, 1999-2003), brutal warlord regimes, and dysfunctional governments left the country with the worst unemployment in the world. As of 2005, Liberia began to turn things around after 14 years of civil war.
