About 25% of the estimated 600,000 Gentoo Penguins in the world live on the Falkland Islands. When they hang out together, which is almost always, they are very noisy. The Gentoo can be recognized by the white stripe that runs over the top of their heads, from eye to eye. They are the shyest penguin species, and the fastest underwater swimmers.
The Gentoo first appeared on the penny in 1974 (KM2, KM2a). In 2019, the Falkland Islands's coinage was updated with the fifth bust of Elizabeth II. The reverse of the coins also underwent a slight change, with the removal of the engraver's initials ("WG" for William Gardner) which previously appeared under the tail of the penguin on the right.
