Tonga 10-SENITI (KM227)

Tongan megapode

The Tongan megapode (Megapodius pritchardii) is the lone surviving species of megapodes endemic to Tonga. In the Tongan language it is called malau.

Baby malaus can fly as soon as they hatch, which is a good thing, because their parents are not there to protect them. Instead of sitting on their eggs to incubate them, they bury them in warm volcanic sand and leave them to incubate on their own. These birds are endangered, mainly due to hunting and egg harvesting.

This coin was first minted in 2015 as part of a new circulating coin series with reduced sizes.
