Australia 20-CENTS (KM564)

Thylacine

In 2001, Australia released a series of circulating commemorative 20 cent coins celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Federation of Australia. There were nine different coins, one for each of the six states and three territories of the country. The reverses were designed by students in a nation-wide competition.

The Tasmania coin features the Thylacine (aka Tasmanian Tiger or Tasmanian Wolf), which was the largest known carnivorous marsupial until it went extinct in the 20th century. (Although some people still claim to spot them.)

The winning design for this coin is by Abbey MacDonald of Launceston Church Grammar School.
