Australia 1-PENNY (KM56)

Kangaroo

The hopping kangaroo first appeared on Australia's penny in 1938 and stayed there until 1964, after which there were no more pennies. (But there were cents.)

There are actually 45 species of kangaroo, and almost all of them are native to Australia. (New Guinea has several species of tree kangaroo.) Boy kangaroos are called bucksboomers, or jacks. Girl kangaroos are called doesflyers, or jills. Babies are known as joeys.
