Solomon Islands is an archipelago of nearly 1,000 islands stretching about 1,500 km from west to east. The ecology is tropical rain forest and there are more than 230 species of orchids and other tropical flowers blooming there.
At one time a British Protectorate, independence was achieved in 1978. Solomon Islands is a constitutional monarchy.
The majority of the people are ethnically Melanesian (~ 94%), with Polynesian (~ 3%) and Micronesian (~ 1%) being the two other main groups. Solomon Islands has about 70 living languages.
