The Beaver is a large semi-aquatic rodent that can weigh over 25 kg. It is Canada's national animal. Its main claim to fame is that it thinks to slap its tail on the water to warn its buddies before it flees from danger.
The beaver design first appeared on Canada's 5-cent coin in 1937 and remains to this day.
This example celebrates the golden jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, who still appears all over Canadian money for some reason. The date was moved from the reverse to the obverse.
