The Republic of Artsakh -- formerly known as Nagorno-Karabakh Republic -- lies between Armenia to the west and Azerbaijan to the east and north. Both these countries claimed the area when they became independent in 1918. The NKR declared independence in 1991, and changed the name to Artsakh in 2017.
The predominantly Armenian population uses the Armenian dram for their currency. The other legal tender is the Artsakh dram, which may or may not circulate.
