Large-eye Dentex
The Large-eye dentex (Dentex macrophthalmus) is a perch-like fish endemic to the islands and whose commercial catch peaked at over 71,000 tonnes the year before this coin was minted. Its flesh was highly esteemed and it was also used for fishmeal and oil. In the years following this coin, the catch collapsed and in the 21st century it hovers around the 2,000 tonne mark.
This FAO coin was minted in 1977 only and although it has not been demonetized (as of 2016) it is rarely seen in circulation now due to inflation. The reverse legend is a Portuguese translation of the FAO slogan "Grow More Food."
