France 2-FRANCS (KM1187)

Stork

In 1960 France underwent monetary reform, with one old franc equal to one new centime. This system lasted until 1999, when France converted to the Euro.

The obverse of this coin portrays Georges Guynemer, a top fighter ace for France during World War II. He flew with the "Storks" squadron, and the stork depicted on the reverse was a symbol of that squadron. It appeared on Guynemer's original biplane.
