Nepal 2-PAISA (KM801) Himalayan Monal
The Himalayan monal is the national bird of Nepal where it is known as Danphe. A largish member of the pheasant family, the males are brightly coloured with iridescent feathers and the females are dull brown. (Birds are like that.)
This coin was issued from 1971 to 1978 under the Nepalese ruler Birendra. The Krause catalogue lists this coin as 20 mm in size, but it is actually 18.6 mm, just like its predecessor (KM753). The date on the coin is almost definitely 2029 (written as २०२ε, which equals 1973).
This example is interesting because the reverse is struck significantly off centre. I have no idea if this was a common occurrence, but if a Canadian coin was struck this way it would be highly coveted among the error collectors.
- Diameter: 18.6 mm
