Mexico underwent monetary reform in 1992, with one new peso equal to 1,000 old pesos. The new one peso coin was a small bimetallic piece (KM550), which was replaced in 1996 with this coin. The only difference is the reverse went from "N$ 1" to simply "$ 1" (N for "new").
